Médico e professor da Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso (UFMT), Gilney Viana já foi deputado federal (1995-1998) e estadual (1999-2002) pelo PT do Mato Grosso.
Já em 2002, Gilney participou da equipe de transição e participou da elaboração do programa de governo de Lula na área de meio ambiente, onde tem maior atuação.
Entre 2003 a 2007 Gilney foi o secretário de Políticas para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) ao lado da Ministra Marina Silva.
Gilney foi um dos fundadores do partido, em 80 o PT em Minas Gerais e, um ano mais tarde, em Mato Grosso. Durante o regime militar participou da resistência armada ao lado de Carlos Marighella e foi preso em dois momentos diferentes, num total de 13 anos.
Além de professor da Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso e coordena a ONG "Flor do Cerrado".
É considerado nacional e internacionalmente como um dos líderes da ala ambiental do PT.
Candidato a Presidente Nacional do PT pela Chapa Militante Socialista, Gilney tem apoio de ambientalistas em todas as regiões do país.
Compõem a chapa que o apóiam Gilney, a tendência Esquerda Socialista em Santa Catarina, que tem entre suas principais lideranças o deputado e atual presidente estadual do PT/SC Pedro Uczai, o deputado federal (atual relator do PPA) e candidato a presidente estadual do PT/SC Cláudio Vignatti e do ex-presidente do PT/SC, ex-deputado e ex-presidente da Eletrosul Milton Mendes.
No estado do Paraná tem o apoio do deputado estadual Tadeu Veneri e do candidato a presidente estadual do PT/PR, vice-prefeito de Sarandi José Aparecido da Silva, o Zezinho.
Em São Paulo conta com apoio da tendência Fórum Socialista e do ex-deputado e candidato a presidente estadual PT/SP Renato Simões.
No Rio de Janeiro o ex-deputado e pré-candidato a prefeito da capital Wladimir Palmeira.
Em Minas Gerais conta com apoio da Tribo, que em 2005 lançou chapa nacional sem candidato a presidente e elegeu um membro da executiva nacional do PT. Dois candidatos a presidente estadual do PT/MG deputados estaduais Durval Ângelo e Padre João apóiam Gilney para presidência nacional do PT.

comunicar para o socialista Glney Viana fazer uma vistoria junto a Prefeitura de Mirassol D´Oeste/MT onde a atual administração age de forma anti partidária o que acarretará incondicionalmente em perda de correligionários (GRATO)!
Gostaria de perguntar ao companheiro, se êle é o mesmo Gilney Viana que nos anos 60 trabalhou no BDMG em Belo Horizonte. Em minha discreta participação política na resistência à Ditadura fascista de 1964, conheci um companheiro com esse mesmo nome, tendo ocorrido um episódio curioso em uma ação planejada e que não foi realizada.
